I use the Android Emulator often during development. One day the emulator stopped responding to physical input from my machine keyboard. Apparently a new setting was added requiring you to enable physical keyboard input. To enable this setting go to Android Studio -> Tools -> Android -> AVD Manager. Click on the edit button for the desired emulator.

Click on “Show Advanced Settings”

Scroll to the very bottom of the advanced settings and check “Enable keyboard input”.
